Cyclic nucleotide-gated cation channel alpha 3 (CNGA3) is the alpha subunit of cone photoreceptor CNG channels, essential for color vision and daylight vision. It forms heterotetrameric channels with CNGB3, allowing cation influx into cone cells in the dark. Light-induced closure of these channels alters the cell's electrical charge, generating a visual signal. Mutations in CNGA3 are associated with achromatopsia and other forms of color blindness.
