Overview

Cyclin dependent kinase 4 pseudogene 1 (CDK4P1), also known as CDK4PS, is a non-coding pseudogene in humans related to the functional CDK4 gene. Pseudogenes are genetic sequences that closely resemble protein-coding genes but have lost the ability to encode functional protein due to mutations, frameshifts, or premature stop codons. While CDK4 is a master regulator of cell cycle progression and an established cancer therapeutic target, CDK4P1 itself does not produce a functional cyclin-dependent kinase protein and shows no evidence of being directly involved in cell signaling or as a drug target. Although some pseudogenes can influence gene expression by acting as competing endogenous RNAs or “microRNA decoys,” sequestering microRNAs that regulate their protein-coding counterparts, there is currently no clear evidence that CDK4P1 exerts such a function in disease biology. Pseudogenes like PTENP1 (for PTEN) are better characterized for such roles, but specific RNA regulatory functions of CDK4P1, if any, are not established in major biomedical databases or reviews.
