Overview

Cyclin-dependent kinase 5 pseudogene (ENSG00000235241, also LOC107985101) is a nonfunctional segment of DNA in the human genome that closely resembles the functional cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (CDK5) gene but does not encode a functional protein[1][4][2]. Pseudogenes like this can arise from gene duplication or other genetic events, but due to accumulated mutations (such as premature stop codons or frameshifts), they have lost their ability to produce proteins and typically lack biological activity[2]. However, some pseudogenes may be transcribed into RNA and can play regulatory roles, such as acting as decoys for microRNAs or interfering with the expression of related protein-coding genes, which can impact cellular functions or disease regulation indirectly[5][8]. Nevertheless, ENSG00000235241 itself is not a therapeutic target and should not be confused with the functional CDK5 enzyme, which is involved in neuron function and has established therapeutic relevance[3]. This pseudogene's annotation means it can sometimes complicate genetic analyses but does not represent an actionable drug target.
