Overview

Cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor 2D (CDKN2D) encodes a member of the INK4 family of CDK inhibitors, specifically binding to and inhibiting CDK4 and CDK6. This inhibition blocks progression through the G1 phase of the cell cycle, thereby functioning as a regulator of cell growth and acting as a tumor suppressor. CDKN2D participates in cellular senescence, neuronal differentiation, repression of neuronal proliferation, spermatogenesis, and possibly DNA repair. Altered expression or mutation of CDKN2D is linked to several human cancers and could affect cellular responses in those contexts.
