Overview

Cyclin-dependent kinase-related kinase 2 (EtCRK2) is a cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) identified in the apicomplexan parasite Eimeria tenella. It is closely related to eukaryotic CDKs, which are serine/threonine protein kinases that regulate cell cycle progression. EtCRK2 plays a critical role in regulating the cell cycle during both asexual and sexual stages of E. tenella's life cycle. It requires association with specific cyclins for full activation. Given its central role in parasite replication and development—and its divergence from host kinases—EtCRK2 represents an attractive target for anti-coccidial drug discovery efforts.
