Overview

Cyclin-I is a member of the highly conserved cyclin family, encoded by the *CCNI* gene, and functions as a cell cycle regulator primarily by activating cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (CDK5)[2][3][7]. Unlike classic cyclins, which have periodic expression matched to cell cycle phases, cyclin I is expressed at constant levels throughout the cell cycle and is particularly abundant in post-mitotic cells such as neurons, as well as in adult heart, brain, and skeletal muscle[2][7]. Cyclin I forms a complex with CDK5 that is involved in antiapoptotic signaling and has been shown to play a role in cancer chemoresistance, specifically by promoting resistance to cisplatin in cervical cancer cells through the inhibition of apoptosis[6]. Cyclin I may also have roles in renal cell survival and disease states including glomerulonephritis[1]. The exact mechanisms and range of therapeutic targeting for cyclin I are currently limited and not well validated, but its regulatory activities in cell survival and death pathways make it a candidate of interest for oncology and other diseases involving aberrant cell proliferation or survival[1][3][6][7].
