Overview
Cyclo-oxygenase 2 (COX-2), also known as prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase 2 (PTGS2), is an inducible enzyme that catalyzes the first two steps in the biosynthesis of prostaglandins from arachidonic acid. Prostaglandins are lipid compounds that play key roles in inflammation, pain, fever, and other physiological processes. COX-2 is a major target for nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and selective COX-2 inhibitors ("coxibs"), which are used to treat pain and inflammation.
