CYCS pseudogene 22 (CYCSP22)

Target
CYCSP22
Molecular classification
Other (pseudogene; specifically a “processed pseudogene” of the cytochrome c, somatic gene)
01

Overview

CYCS pseudogene 22 (CYCSP22, HCP22) is a processed pseudogene in the human genome related to the cytochrome c, somatic (CYCS/HCS) gene. Pseudogenes like CYCSP22 are DNA sequences resembling functional genes but have lost their ability to encode a protein due to mutations, frameshifts, or truncations[2][3]. CYCSP22 is one of at least 49 cytochrome c pseudogenes (HCPs) in humans, most of which are neither transcribed nor translated, and are considered evolutionary remnants of gene duplication or retrotransposition events[2]. There is no scientific evidence establishing any functional RNA or protein product from CYCSP22, and it is not a pharmacological or biological target in therapeutics or diagnostic applications[1][3]. Occasionally, some pseudogenes have been implicated in gene regulation in other systems, but this is not established for CYCSP22[4].

Mechanism of action

None established. No drugs or chemical modulators are known to act via this pseudogene.

03

Biological functions

None established for the pseudogene itselfRare reports suggest some pseudogenes may regulate gene expression (e.g., miRNA decoys or as sources of small non-coding RNAs), but this is not established for CYCSP22 specifically.
04

Disease associations

None established for CYCSP22
05

Safety considerations

None, as it is not a therapeutic target and does not produce a protein product.
