Overview

CYCS pseudogene 40 (CYCSP40, also known as HCP40 or HC7) is a processed pseudogene derived from the cytochrome c (somatic) gene (CYCS). It is one of the 49 cytochrome c pseudogenes identified in the human genome. Pseudogenes like CYCSP40 are generally non-functional, lacking introns and possessing mutations such as frame shifts and premature stop codons that prevent the production of functional protein. CYCSP40 is not expressed, nor is it associated with any known biological functions or disease roles. It is not considered a therapeutic target, and there are no drugs or biomarkers associated with it[2][3][4]. Key notes: - CYCS pseudogene 40 should not be mistaken for the functional cytochrome c (somatic) gene (CYCS), which is a mitochondrial electron carrier involved in both respiration and apoptosis[5]. - As a pseudogene, CYCSP40 lacks coding potential and regulatory functions, and is not involved in drug action or disease pathology. - Its aliases (HCP40, HC7) derive from systematic pseudogene nomenclature assignments; "HCP" is used in major cytochrome c pseudogene surveys, e.g., HCP1–HCP49[2]. There is nothing to suggest CYCSP40 is a therapeutic target, receptor, enzyme, transporter, or has any established functional, disease, or pharmacological relevance. Its inclusion in a list of drug targets would be incorrect.
