Overview

CYCS pseudogene 8 (CYCSP8) is one of 49 cytochrome c pseudogenes identified in the human genome[4][5]. Pseudogenes are DNA sequences that resemble functional genes but have lost their protein-coding ability due to mutations, deletions, or other genetic alterations. The cytochrome c pseudogenes, including CYCSP8, are spread across 18 of the 24 human chromosomes and lack the introns present in the functional cytochrome c gene[5]. Most of these pseudogenes contain obvious disablements in their coding regions and are not expressed, as confirmed by searches of human EST databases[4][5]. These pseudogenes represent an evolutionary record of the human cytochrome c gene and likely arose through reverse transcription events followed by genomic integration. While the original cytochrome c gene encodes a protein essential for cellular respiration and electron transport, the pseudogenes like CYCSP8 are non-functional remnants that do not produce proteins and therefore are not considered therapeutic targets.
