Bai Qian is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herb derived from the dried rhizomes and roots of Cynanchum stauntonii or Cynanchum glaucescens [1, 5, 13]. It is primarily recognized in herbal pharmacopeias for its antitussive and expectorant properties, frequently utilized in treating respiratory conditions such as chronic bronchitis, asthma, and cough accompanied by excessive phlegm [1, 2, 10]. Although TCM theory describes Bai Qian as 'targeting' the Lung meridian, it is not a specific molecular target (such as a receptor or enzyme) in the context of modern molecular biology; rather, it is a complex botanical source of various bioactive compounds [1, 5]. These compounds, which include steroidal saponins, glycosides, and volatile oils, are thought to work synergistically to reduce inflammation and regulate mucus secretion in the airways [10, 13, 14]. While it does not interact with a single receptor in the conventional sense, it is often found in complex multi-herb formulas like Lianhua Qingwen, which have been studied for their anti-inflammatory and antiviral effects [13, 14]. Because Bai Qian represents a botanical mixture rather than a singular protein or receptor, it is considered an incorrect classification for a molecular target entity.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Bai Qian is categorized as a 'warm herb that transforms phlegm and stops cough.' It acts on the Lung meridian to descend Qi and resolve phlegm [1]. Modern research suggests that its bioactive steroidal saponins and glycosides exert anti-inflammatory and antitussive effects by modulating inflammatory cytokines and mucus secretion pathways [10, 13, 14].
