CYP4A22 antisense RNA 1 (CYP4A22-AS1, also called ncRNA-a3) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) transcribed antisense to the CYP4A22 gene[1][4][6]. It does not encode a protein and is not a classical “target” such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter. CYP4A22-AS1 is known to promote lung adenocarcinoma cell proliferation and metastasis by acting as a regulatory sponge for microRNAs miR-205-5p and miR-34c-5p, which are tumor suppressor miRNAs[1][5]. By downregulating these miRNAs, CYP4A22-AS1 increases the expression of genes such as EREG (Epiregulin, an EGFR ligand) and BCL-2 (an anti-apoptotic factor), activating oncogenic EGFR and anti-apoptotic pathways, as well as promoting EMT (epithelial-mesenchymal transition)[1][5]. Its high expression is correlated with a poorer prognosis in multiple cancers, but it is not currently the direct target of available drugs or experimental therapies[1][2][5].
