Overview

Cystatin-like 1 is a member of the cystatin superfamily located at the telomeric end of the cystatin locus on human chromosome 20. The protein carries domains typical for type 2 cystatins, a class usually associated with cysteine protease inhibition found in body fluids and secretions. However, CSTL1 itself has not been experimentally confirmed as a cysteine protease inhibitor, and its specific biological function remains to be determined. The gene is annotated in major protein and genomic databases with several aliases, but does not currently have a documented role as a drug target or biomarker and is not linked to any clear mechanism of disease or therapeutic action.
