Cystatin SA pseudogene 1 (CST2P1) is a non-protein-coding DNA sequence within the human cystatin locus on chromosome 20. It is related by sequence homology to the active cystatin SA protein (coded by the CST2 gene), which is a member of the cystatin superfamily of cysteine protease inhibitors found in human saliva. Pseudogenes like CST2P1 arise by gene duplication or retrotransposition and accumulate mutations that prevent them from encoding functional proteins. CST2P1 has no known biological function and is not considered a therapeutic target. Its presence is useful primarily for evolutionary and genomic studies rather than clinical or pharmacological applications. If you intended the active protein-coding gene ("Cystatin SA", CST2), refer to CST2 (not CST2P1); CST2 does encode a functional cystatin protein found in saliva and is part of the cystatin superfamily of cysteine protease inhibitors. The pseudogene CST2P1 itself is non-functional.
