Overview

Cysteine-rich hydrophobic domain-containing protein 1 (CHIC1) is a membrane-associated protein encoded by the CHIC1 gene, one of the few protein-coding genes located near the X-inactivation center in humans and mice[1][5][7][8]. The protein contains a cysteine-rich hydrophobic (CHIC) domain, and mouse orthologs are subject to X-inactivation. CHIC1 is predicted to associate with membranes through post-translational palmitoylation of cysteine residues. While several transcript variants exist due to alternative splicing, the biological function of CHIC1 remains unclear, with no direct evidence supporting a role as a receptor, enzyme, or classical signaling molecule. There are genetic links with intellectual disability syndromes, but its molecular mechanism of involvement in disease is not established[1][5][7][8][9].
