Overview

Cysteine-rich ocular surface mucins refer to high molecular weight, heavily O-glycosylated membrane-associated glycoproteins, primarily MUC1, MUC4, and MUC16, expressed on the apical surface of corneal and conjunctival epithelia. These mucins form a dense, protective glycocalyx barrier critical for tear film stability, lubrication, and defense against mechanical, environmental, and microbial insults. Their cysteine-rich domains enable structural stability and cross-linking, enhancing barrier function. Disruption or alteration of these mucins is implicated in dry eye, ocular allergy, and other ocular surface pathologies.
