Overview

Cystathionine gamma lyase (CGL) is a pyridoxal phosphate-dependent enzyme that catalyzes the breakdown of cystathionine into cysteine, α-ketobutyrate, and ammonia. It is the final enzyme in the trans-sulfuration pathway, converting methionine to cysteine. By generating hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), CGL participates in several physiological processes and has been implicated in cardiovascular diseases and cancer.
