The "cytochrome c, somatic pseudogene" is a non-functional genomic DNA sequence related by sequence similarity to the functional cytochrome c gene; this pseudogene arose by retrotransposition or gene duplication events and contains disabling mutations that prevent expression of a functional protein. In humans, numerous cytochrome c pseudogenes exist, but they do not encode active protein and have no direct biological or therapeutic relevance
