Cytochrome c oxidase is a large transmembrane protein complex, also known as Complex IV of the electron transport chain. It is found in the inner mitochondrial membrane of eukaryotes and in the plasma membrane of aerobic prokaryotes. This enzyme serves as the terminal component of oxidative phosphorylation, catalyzing the final step in cellular respiration. It catalyzes the four-electron reduction of molecular oxygen (O₂) to water (H₂O) and couples this redox reaction to proton translocation across the mitochondrial inner membrane, generating an electrochemical gradient used for ATP synthesis.
