COX5A encodes a nuclear-encoded subunit of Complex IV (cytochrome c oxidase) of the mitochondrial respiratory chain, but this pseudogene cannot produce a functional protein. Pseudogenes are common features of mammalian genomes, generated through gene duplication or retrotransposition, and are typically classified as junk DNA due to lack of coding capacity and regulatory sequences[2][4][5]. They may rarely produce non-coding RNAs with minor or undocumented regulatory functions, but there is no evidence that ENSG00000257296 has any functional or clinical significance.
