Cytochrome c oxidase subunit 5B pseudogene 2 (COX5BP2) is a pseudogene in the human genome related by sequence to the COX5B gene, which encodes a subunit of cytochrome c oxidase in the mitochondrial electron transport chain[5]. COX5BP2 is a non-coding pseudogene, meaning it does not give rise to a functional protein product. Pseudogenes like COX5BP2 may exist due to gene duplication or retrotransposition events, and generally lack the necessary sequences or regulatory elements to produce a functional protein[4]. Although a subset of pseudogenes can regulate other genes at the RNA level, there is currently no evidence for any specific biological or disease role attributable to COX5BP2[2][4][5]. It is not known to function as a therapeutic target, and no drugs are described to act at this locus.
