Cytochrome c oxidase subunit 5B pseudogene 3 (COX5BP3) is a human pseudogene resembling the functional COX5B gene, which encodes a subunit of cytochrome c oxidase, the terminal enzyme in the mitochondrial electron transport chain. As a pseudogene, COX5BP3 is presumed nonfunctional at the protein level and is not known to encode an active enzyme or structural protein. Pseudogenes like COX5BP3 may retain regulatory potential at the RNA level, including roles as noncoding RNAs that can act as microRNA decoys, regulators of gene expression, or sources of small interfering RNAs, but these roles are not specifically documented for COX5BP3. There is no evidence that it serves as a therapeutic target, interacts with drugs, or has established roles in human disease, biomarkers, or safety concerns.
