Cytochrome c oxidase subunit 5B pseudogene 8 (COX5BP8)

Overview

COX5BP8 is a pseudogene derived from the gene encoding cytochrome c oxidase subunit 5B, part of the mitochondrial enzyme complex IV (also known as cytochrome c oxidase), which is essential for mitochondrial respiration and energy production in human cells[1][3][7]. Unlike the functional COX5B gene, which encodes a protein involved in the electron transport chain, the COX5BP8 pseudogene results from gene duplication or retrotransposition and contains disabling mutations that render it nonfunctional in humans[5]. Pseudogenes such as COX5BP8 are generally considered biologically inactive and do not encode functional proteins, although some pseudogenes in other contexts are known to exert regulatory functions at the RNA level[4][6]. There is no published evidence implicating COX5BP8 in any disease processes, therapeutic targeting, or as a biomarker, nor are there any drugs or mechanisms of action associated with this specific pseudogene[5].
