Overview

Cytochrome c oxidase subunit 6B1 pseudogene 2 (COX6B1P2) is a processed pseudogene that is genetically similar to the functional COX6B1 gene, which encodes one of the nuclear-encoded subunits of cytochrome c oxidase (Complex IV of the mitochondrial respiratory chain)[1][2]. COX6B1P2 emerged from a duplication and retrotransposition event and has acquired disabling mutations, preventing it from encoding a functional protein[1][2]. Like other pseudogenes, COX6B1P2 is considered nonfunctional and is not implicated directly in cellular metabolism, signaling, or disease phenotypes. Pseudogenes in general may be transcribed at low levels and can sometimes confer subtle regulatory effects, but no data support a functional role for COX6B1P2. Importantly, it can confound nucleic acid-based assays due to sequence similarity with its parent gene[2].

Safety considerations

No notable safety concerns; pseudogene sequences can sometimes confound PCR or sequencing studies, but this is a general issue for all pseudogenes
