Cytochrome c oxidase subunit 6C (COX6C)

Target
COX6C
Molecular classification
Enzyme (specifically a structural subunit of an oxidoreductase enzyme complex), Other — Respiratory chain complex protein
01

Overview

Cytochrome c oxidase subunit 6C is a nuclear-encoded protein that forms part of the cytochrome c oxidase enzyme (complex IV) in the mitochondrial inner membrane[1][2][7]. Cytochrome c oxidase catalyzes the final step of the mitochondrial respiratory electron transport chain, transferring electrons from cytochrome c to oxygen, resulting in the formation of water and contributing to the proton gradient necessary for ATP synthesis[2][3][4]. Subunit 6C is considered a structural component, with potential roles in the assembly and regulation of the enzyme complex rather than in catalysis itself[1][2][4][7]. The COX6C gene is upregulated in certain cancer types, including prostate cancer, and mutations in other subunits of complex IV are associated with mitochondrial diseases[1][2]. There are no drugs known to selectively modulate subunit 6C, nor is it a direct clinical biomarker or therapeutic target at present[2][7].
