Cytochrome c oxidase subunit 6C pseudogene 1 (COX6CP1)

Overview

Cytochrome c oxidase subunit 6C pseudogene 1 (COX6CP1) is located on human chromosome 16p12 and represents a non-protein coding pseudogene related to cytochrome c oxidase subunit 6C (COX6C)[4]. While the parental gene, COX6C, encodes a structural subunit of the mitochondrial electron transport chain enzyme cytochrome c oxidase and is involved in oxidative phosphorylation, apoptosis, and is implicated in various diseases[2], COX6CP1 itself does not produce a functional protein and is not known to serve as a drug target or biomarker. Pseudogenes may have regulatory roles such as acting as miRNA decoys or sources of siRNAs that affect the expression of related protein-coding genes, though thus far, no specific function or disease association has been assigned to COX6CP1[3].

COX6CP1cytochrome c oxidase subunit VIc pseudogene 1

Mechanism of action

None. Pseudogene does not have a protein product or conventional target role.

03

Biological functions

Pseudogenes generally do not produce functional proteins; however, they can have regulatory roles such as possible modulation of gene expression via miRNA decoy or siRNA production[3]. No evidence for direct involvement of COX6CP1 in cell biology functions.
04

Disease associations

None directly established for COX6CP1. The functional COX6C protein is upregulated in cancer cells and involved in apoptosis and energy metabolism, but this does not apply to the pseudogene[2][4].
05

Safety considerations

None directly associated, since pseudogenes are not therapeutic targets.
06

Interacting drugs

None. Drugs interact with cytochrome c oxidase or other subunits, not the pseudogene.
07

Biomarkers

None. The functional COX6C may serve as a biomarker for oxidative metabolism and cancer, but not the pseudogene[2].
