Overview

Cytochrome c oxidase subunit 6C pseudogene 11 (COX6CP11) is a retrotransposed pseudogene derived from the functional cytochrome c oxidase subunit 6C gene. Pseudogenes such as COX6CP11 are segments of DNA that share high sequence similarity with their parent genes but typically lack introns, contain frame disruptions, and do not produce functional proteins. Their presence is often a result of evolutionary processes such as retrotransposition (reverse transcription of mRNA followed by integration into the genome). While some pseudogenes can have regulatory roles at the RNA level or as sources of genetic diversity, there is no evidence for a specific biological or disease function for COX6CP11. Pseudogenes can be mistakenly annotated as functional genes in sequence databases, which can complicate genetic analyses[1].
