Overview

COX6CP15 (cytochrome c oxidase subunit 6C pseudogene 15) is a human pseudogene related to the protein-coding gene COX6C, which encodes a nuclear-encoded structural subunit (subunit VIc) of the mitochondrial enzyme cytochrome c oxidase (complex IV in the electron transport chain)[1][5]. The parent gene, COX6C, is involved in cellular respiration and energy production, but COX6CP15 specifically is a pseudogene and does not code for a functional protein. Pseudogenes are generally considered to be nonfunctional genomic sequences formed by duplication or retrotransposition events and may carry mutations that prevent normal protein expression[2][4]. While some pseudogenes are now known to act as regulatory noncoding RNAs, the functional significance of COX6CP15 specifically has not been characterized in the literature[2][6]. There is confusion potential due to the similarity of the COX6CP15 name to COX6C, which is an actual enzyme subunit and can be implicated in disease and cellular respiration[1][5]. However, all known references for COX6CP15 suggest it is a pseudogene. No evidence positions COX6CP15 as a drug target or suggests it is involved in protein-based disease pathways, nor are there any drugs known to act on this pseudogene. Some pseudogenes are being studied for potential regulatory roles in cancers and other diseases[2][6], but there is no such published evidence for COX6CP15.
