Overview

Cytochrome c oxidase subunit 6C pseudogene 3 (COX6CP3) is a non-functional genomic locus classified as a pseudogene. It is homologous to the protein-coding gene cytochrome c oxidase subunit 6C, a component of the mitochondrial electron transport chain, but has lost the ability to encode a functional protein due to disabling sequence mutations. In general, pseudogenes like COX6CP3 do not produce active proteins and are not directly involved in cellular metabolism or drug targeting. However, some pseudogenes are transcribed and may regulate related coding genes via various RNA-based mechanisms, such as acting as microRNA decoys or generating small interfering RNAs, though there is no evidence that COX6CP3 plays such a regulatory role. Some pseudogene deregulation has been observed in cancer and other diseases, but COX6CP3 specifically has not been implicated in any pathologies to date. In summary, COX6CP3 represents a dead or non-functional copy of a gene related to mitochondrial respiration, not an active molecular target, with no documented therapeutic relevance, druggability, or disease association as of current knowledge.
