Overview

COX6CP5, or cytochrome c oxidase subunit 6C pseudogene 5, is classified as a processed pseudogene in the human genome. Unlike its parental gene (COX6C), which codes for a functional component of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase complex involved in the electron transport chain and cellular respiration, COX6CP5 does not encode a functional protein. Pseudogenes, such as COX6CP5, typically arise from duplications or retrotransposition events, resulting in gene copies that have lost protein-coding potential due to accumulated mutations. While some pseudogenes exhibit regulatory RNA functions, there is currently no published evidence that COX6CP5 itself has such activity or involvement in disease processes. Thus, COX6CP5 is not a therapeutic target, nor does it have known drug interactions, clinical biomarker utility, or associated safety concerns.

Biological functions

None demonstrated for the pseudogene itself; parental gene (COX6C) is involved in mitochondrial electron transport
03

Disease associations

None specifically known for this pseudogene; some pseudogenes have regulatory functions in cancer and other diseases, but there is no evidence for COX6CP5 specifically
