It is related by sequence homology to the gene encoding cytochrome c oxidase subunit 6C (COX6C), a component of cytochrome c oxidase, which is the terminal enzyme complex in the mitochondrial electron transport chain responsible for the final step of oxidative phosphorylation and cellular respiration[5][7]. However, COX6CP7 itself is not transcribed into a functional protein and has no known direct biological or pathological function. Pseudogenes such as COX6CP7 are generally not considered therapeutic targets, though some pseudogenes can occasionally play regulatory roles at the RNA level; there is no evidence COX6CP7 does so[1][2][4][6].
