Overview

Cytochrome c oxidase subunit 7A1 (COX7A1) is a structural subunit of cytochrome c oxidase (complex IV), which is the terminal enzyme of the mitochondrial electron transport chain responsible for catalyzing the reduction of oxygen to water and driving oxidative phosphorylation[2][3]. The COX7A1 gene encodes a nuclear-encoded, muscle-specific isoform of subunit VIIa, predominantly expressed in heart and skeletal muscle[2][3]. COX7A1 contributes to assembly, structural stability, and regulation of cytochrome c oxidase activity[2]. It plays a role in energy metabolism, cellular respiration, and can impact cell proliferation and death processes such as autophagy and ferroptosis, especially in pathological conditions such as cancer where altered expression has been linked to tumor progression and therapy sensitivity[1][2].
