Cytochrome c oxidase subunit 7B2 is a nuclear-encoded component of the cytochrome c oxidase (Complex IV) enzyme in the mitochondrial inner membrane[1][2][6]. Complex IV catalyzes the transfer of electrons from cytochrome c to molecular oxygen, forming water and helping generate the proton gradient used for ATP synthesis. Subunit 7B2 helps maintain the structural integrity and functional efficiency of the overall enzyme, although it does not directly participate in catalysis. Mutations or defects in subunits of cytochrome c oxidase, including 7B2, have been associated with rare mitochondrial disorders, but this specific subunit is not a common drug target and there are currently no approved drugs targeting COX7B2 directly[1][2][5]. The gene is expressed in mitochondria-rich tissues and may also play a role in spermatogenesis[5][6].
