Cytochrome c oxidase III pseudogenes are nuclear DNA sequences in the human genome that are highly homologous to the mitochondrial DNA-encoded cytochrome c oxidase subunit III gene but do not code for functional protein. Their presence is generally considered a result of past evolutionary gene duplication or transfer events, and the main function of such pseudogenes appears to be as evolutionary markers—they do not participate in cell signaling, metabolism, or disease. Unlike the actual cytochrome c oxidase subunit III, which is an essential component of mitochondrial electron transport and a valid therapeutic target, these pseudogenes are non-functional and not used as drug targets or biomarkers[5][1]. Their genetic annotation exists mainly for the purpose of clarifying genome structure and curation. If your aim is to target actual cytochrome c oxidase activity, you should refer to the mitochondrial-encoded gene MT-CO3, not nuclear pseudogene loci such as ENSG00000231034.
