Overview

Cytochrome c oxidase subunit VIc pseudogene is a non-functional genomic locus related by sequence similarity to the active cytochrome c oxidase subunit VIc gene (COX6C). Unlike the protein-coding COX6C gene, which encodes a structural subunit of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase (complex IV) and participates in the terminal step of the mitochondrial electron transport chain, this pseudogene does not produce a functional protein product. Pseudogenes like this are remnants of duplicated genes or genetic recombination events and typically lack protein-coding capacity due to mutations or truncations. The cytochrome c oxidase subunit VIc pseudogene (noted in some references as COX6CP1) can be found at chromosome 16p12, distinct from the active COX6C gene on chromosome 8q22.2. There is currently no evidence for a biological or pathological role for this pseudogene itself.
