Cytochrome c oxidase subunit VIc pseudogene 12 (COX6CP12)

Target
COX6CP12
Molecular classification
Pseudogene

Overview

Cytochrome c oxidase subunit VIc pseudogene 12 (COX6CP12) is a processed pseudogene in the human genome. It is derived from the gene coding for the cytochrome c oxidase subunit VIc, a small nuclear-encoded component of cytochrome c oxidase (complex IV of the mitochondrial electron transport chain). However, as a pseudogene, COX6CP12 does not produce a functional protein; it is regarded as a non-coding genetic element arising via retrotransposition and subsequent mutation that lost coding potential. Pseudogenes like COX6CP12 can play regulatory roles at the RNA level, but are not considered functional targets for drug development or therapeutic intervention.
