The cytochrome c oxidase subunit VIIb pseudogene (ENSG00000227667, LOC107985222) is a non-coding DNA sequence in the human genome that is similar in sequence to the functional COX7B gene, which encodes a subunit of cytochrome c oxidase (complex IV of the mitochondrial electron transport chain)[1][2][3]. As a pseudogene, it does not produce a functional protein, and is not considered a therapeutic target. Pseudogenes typically arise due to gene duplication or retrotransposition events, and accumulate mutations that render them nonfunctional. The functional COX7B gene is important for mitochondrial respiration and central nervous system development, but these roles do not apply to the pseudogene[1][3][4].
