Overview

Cytochrome c pseudogene 1 (CYCSP1), also known as HC5 or HCP36, is one of the several processed pseudogenes related to the functional cytochrome c gene family in humans. These pseudogenes, including CYCSP1, have arisen primarily from retrotransposition events and do not produce functional protein products. While the functional homolog, cytochrome c, is a critical electron-carrying protein in the mitochondrial respiratory chain and a regulator of apoptosis, CYCSP1 itself is an inactive genomic relic, lacking coding potential for protein synthesis. There is no evidence that CYCSP1 serves as a therapeutic target, nor does it participate in recognized biological or disease processes. Pseudogenes, in general, may sometimes be transcribed and act as regulatory RNAs, but there is no specific data supporting such a regulatory function for CYCSP1. The existence of multiple cytochrome c pseudogenes, like CYCSP1, in the human genome likely reflects molecular evolutionary processes rather than any current functional role.
