Cytochrome c pseudogene 28 (CYCSP28), also known as HCP28, is one of 49 identified processed pseudogenes in the human genome related to the cytochrome c (CYCS) gene, which encodes the essential mitochondrial electron transport protein cytochrome c. These pseudogenes arise through retrotransposition from CYCS mRNA, resulting in sequences that lack introns and often contain disabling mutations or truncations[3][4]. CYCSP28 does not produce a functional protein and is not transcribed; its sequence is a disabled copy of the parental gene, distributed as part of a larger family of cytochrome c pseudogenes across the human genome[3][4]. There is no evidence that CYCSP28 is expressed or involved in pathophysiology or therapeutic intervention. It is included only for genomic annotation and molecular evolution studies, rather than as a functional or druggable biological entity.
