Cytochrome c pseudogene 34 (CYCSP34, also known as HCP34) is one of nearly 50 identified cytochrome c–related pseudogenes in the human genome[3]. Pseudogenes are genetic sequences similar to known genes but are considered nonfunctional due to disabling mutations, lack of expression, and/or truncation[2][3]. CYCSP34 is not expressed as a protein and shows features common to processed pseudogenes, such as absence of introns and frequent inactivating mutations. These pseudogenes do not participate in normal cytochrome c biological functions, such as electron transport or apoptosis, and are generally unrelated to disease or therapeutic intervention[2][3][6]. No evidence supports CYCSP34 as a therapeutic, diagnostic, or functional target. It should not be confused with the functional cytochrome c gene (CYCS), which plays important roles in mitochondrial electron transport and apoptosis[6]; only the functional CYCS gene product is therapeutically relevant. Overall, CYCSP34 is a non-coding, nonfunctional pseudogene with no current biomedical significance as a molecular target.
