Overview

Cytochrome c pseudogene 44 (CYCSP44, also called HCP44) is one of 49 identified human pseudogenes derived from the functional cytochrome c gene (CYCS/HCS). Pseudogenes like CYCSP44 result from retrotransposition events; they lack introns, are often truncated, usually contain disabling mutations, and do not produce functional products. Comprehensive genomic and transcriptomic analyses have shown that these cytochrome c pseudogenes, including HCP44/CYCSP44, are not expressed, are not involved in electron transport or apoptosis, and have no known role in human biology or disease. As such, CYCSP44 is neither a therapeutic target nor a functional gene, and its annotation is primarily of interest for understanding gene evolution and genome structure[3][5].
