The cytochrome P450, family 3, subfamily A, pseudogene is a non-functional genomic element found within the CYP3A gene cluster on human chromosome 7q21-q22[1][3]. While the CYP3A family encodes important monooxygenase enzymes that metabolize a broad range of drugs and endogenous substrates, the pseudogenes within this region (e.g., CYP3A51P, CYP3A52P, CYP3A54P, CYP3A137P) do not produce functional proteins. These pseudogenes arise via gene duplication and subsequent mutation, resulting in loss of enzymatic activity. While some pseudogenes can have regulatory effects at the RNA level, there is no established function or disease association for these CYP3A pseudogenes[3]. Key Note: Pseudogenes with "CYP3A" in their names are easily confused with protein-coding CYP3A enzymes (like CYP3A4, a major enzyme in drug metabolism). However, only the protein-coding genes are relevant as therapeutic targets[1].
