Cytochrome P450 2A13 is a member of the cytochrome P450 superfamily of enzymes encoded by the CYP2A13 gene. It functions as a monooxygenase localized mainly on the endoplasmic reticulum membrane and is highly expressed in respiratory tract tissues such as the lungs. This enzyme catalyzes many reactions involved in drug metabolism and xenobiotic biotransformation—including steroid hydroxylation—and plays a key role in metabolizing both endogenous compounds and exogenous substances like nicotine, coumarin, naphthalene, styrene, toluene, and especially tobacco-specific nitrosamines such as NNK. Its activity leads either to detoxification or bioactivation into potentially harmful intermediates implicated particularly in lung carcinogenesis among smokers. Genetic variations affecting its expression or function can influence individual susceptibility to certain cancers linked with exposure to these compounds.
Drugs or chemicals interacting with CYP2A13 typically undergo oxidation via monooxygenase activity, leading to either detoxification or bioactivation into reactive metabolites that may be toxic or carcinogenic.
