Overview

Cytochrome P450-dependent all-trans-retinoic acid 4-hydroxylase refers primarily to the CYP26 family of enzymes, especially CYP26A1, which catalyze the hydroxylation of all-trans-retinoic acid (atRA) at the 4-position. This reaction is a key step in retinoic acid catabolism and regulates its biological activity by converting atRA into less active metabolites such as 4-hydroxy-RA and subsequently 4-oxo-RA. It is involved in embryogenesis, cell differentiation and modulating response/resistance to systemic/topical retinol-based therapies.
