Cytochrome P450 family 1 subfamily A polypeptide 1 (CYP1A1)

Target
CYP1A1
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Cytochrome P450, Monooxygenase
01

Overview

Cytochrome P450 1A1 (CYP1A1) is a member of the cytochrome P450 superfamily of enzymes involved in the metabolism of drugs, xenobiotics, and endogenous compounds. It is primarily found in extrahepatic tissues and is inducible by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). CYP1A1 can both activate procarcinogens into carcinogenic metabolites and detoxify certain compounds, playing a complex role in cancer development. Genetic polymorphisms can affect its inducibility and influence cancer susceptibility. It metabolizes endogenous substrates such as fatty acids, steroid hormones, vitamins (notably retinoic acid), and eicosanoids.

Other names
Aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylaseAHH

Mechanism of action

CYP1A1 is a monooxygenase that catalyzes the oxidation of various substrates, including xenobiotics and endogenous compounds, using molecular oxygen and NADPH. It can activate procarcinogens into carcinogenic metabolites.
