Target intelligence / Profile preview
Cytochrome P450 11A1 (CYP11A1), also known as cholesterol side-chain cleavage enzyme or P450scc, is a mitochondrial enzyme that catalyzes the first and rate-limiting step in steroid hormone biosynthesis. It converts cholesterol into pregnenolone, the precursor for all steroid hormones. Mutations in CYP11A1 can lead to congenital adrenal insufficiency.
