Cytochrome P450 family 17 subfamily A member 1 (CYP17A1)

Target
CYP17A1
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Cytochrome P450 superfamily
01

Overview

Cytochrome P450 17A1 (CYP17A1) is a crucial enzyme in human steroid hormone biosynthesis, catalyzing two key reactions: 17α-hydroxylation and 17,20-lyase activity. These activities are essential for the production of glucocorticoids, sex steroids, and mineralocorticoids. The enzyme is localized to the endoplasmic reticulum of cells primarily within adrenal glands, gonads, and placenta. Mutations or deficiencies in CYP17A1 can lead to several disorders, including congenital adrenal hyperplasia and pseudohermaphroditism. Altered CYP17A1 function has implications for diseases such as polycystic ovary syndrome, adrenarche abnormalities, prostate cancer, and other endocrine disorders.
