Overview

Cytochrome P450 family 3 subfamily A member 43 (CYP3A43) is a heme-thiolate monooxygenase found primarily in the liver but also expressed in a variety of tissues. As a member of the CYP3A subfamily, it shares homology with CYP3A4, CYP3A5, and CYP3A7, but exhibits distinct substrate specificities and lower monooxygenase activity levels, notably for testosterone and estrogen metabolism. CYP3A43 is implicated in steroid synthesis, drug metabolism, and may have roles in cancer progression, particularly prostate cancer. Its clinical relevance is underscored by its genetic variability (alternative splicing, polymorphisms) and potential contribution to inter-individual differences in drug response and disease risk.
