Cytochrome P450 Family 51 (CYP51)

Target
CYP51
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Cytochrome P450, Monooxygenase

Overview

The CYP51 family, also known as cytochrome P450 family 51 or sterol 14α-demethylase, is a highly conserved group of enzymes found across animals, fungi, and plants. These enzymes play a critical role in the biosynthesis of sterols by catalyzing the demethylation of lanosterol and related molecules—a key step in producing cholesterol and other essential sterols. It is a major drug target for antifungal drugs such as azoles.
