Cytochrome P450 Family Enzymes (CYP)

Target
CYP
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Monooxygenase, Heme-thiolate protein
01

Overview

Cytochrome P450 enzymes (CYPs) are a large superfamily of heme-containing monooxygenases involved in the metabolism of a wide range of endogenous and exogenous compounds. They play a crucial role in drug metabolism, steroid hormone biosynthesis, and detoxification processes. Genetic polymorphisms in CYP genes can lead to inter-individual differences in drug response and toxicity. Some CYP isoforms are therapeutic targets for diseases involving steroid hormone imbalances or other metabolic disorders.
